No matter how objective someone is, personal beliefs can influence their choice of words and it has become quite common for reporters to make political statements while carrying out their work. This liberal media bias is becoming more common and is not difficult to spot. Step1--Notice if a presumption is made that supports a liberal point of view. One example of a presumption exposing liberal media bias is stating that conservatives have cut the spending on a certain program when the cut was relative to the expected rate of growth. The program is actually funded at a higher level than the year before, but the public is made to believe that less money has been appropriated for the program than in the past. Step2--Check if important facts are omitted. Liberal media bias can be reflected in the absence of the whole truth in a story. An example of this would be asserting that more money needs to be spent on education without acknowledging that test scores are higher in some areas that spend less on education. By omitting the second fact, the initial statement leads people to believe that the only way to increase the quality of education is to spend more money on it, which is inaccurate. Step3--Pay attention to what stories they report and what stories they ignore. Liberal media bias can be reflected through presenting a story on a liberal study, yet ignoring a conservative study on the same subject.
Step4--bserve the placement of stories. There are prime spots in a newspaper such as the front page, or the front page above the fold. There are also bad spots such as on the bottom of page C16. There are also better segments to be in during a broadcast. Liberal media bias can be seen by where a story is placed in the paper or broadcast.
Step5--Make note of the sources. Reporters choose sources that they know support their view or the point they want to get across. Liberal media bias is present when a reporter picks an expert source who has a liberal view of an issue.
Step6--Analyze the labels that are attached to certain groups. Conservatives are often referred to as far right or extreme, but liberals are considered moderate. Liberal media bias can very easily depict an individual or group of individuals in any manner they like through these subjective labels.
Step7--Monitor who they support in elections. The media cannot select all liberals when they are giving their endorsements in elections. However, liberal media bias can be shown in who they endorse in specific races. The media endorses conservative candidates in races where it is obvious the conservative is winning while in close races they almost exclusively support the liberal candidate.
