Congratulations Prince William County Republican Committee!

On Saturday December 5th at the 2009 Don Huffman Annual Advance in Williamsburg the Republican Party of Virginia awarded PWCRC the Best Unit Award for the 11th Congressional District. You continued to grow your unit, you made an outstanding effort during the campaign in door knocking, phone banking, supporting all of the candidates and the proof is in the remarkable 34 point turnaround from last year in the general election. You won big for the McDonnell/Bolling/Cuccinelli ticket and brought home 4 out of 5 Delegate seats!! Whooooh..Hhoooh..GO PWCRC.!!

Hi All,

Thank you all so much, for all of your hard work, both at the polls Tuesday and all throughout this long campaign season!! Savor your victory, but know this, the battle has just begun to restore honor, fiscal responsibility, family and moral values, sense of personal responsibility and limited government in our America.

Prince William’s remarkable turn around signifies us as the Lexington of the 21st century. This shot has been heard ‘round the world. There will be many battles ahead in the coming years as we reclaim the country that our Founding Fathers envisioned. We will need to work together to continue at the grassroots precinct level to assure our success in the future.

Here are attached some of the totals from Tuesday's election, enjoy them, but remember we are never more than one year away from crushing defeat, if we don’t maintain our vigilance and work hard. Freedom is not free, it comes with the responsibility to protect and defend it against all enemies, both foreign and domestic!

With your help we have accomplished an amazing result. Prince William County went from down 16 points in the last year's general election to plus 18 points this year!! That is a 34 point swing in just one year. You all deserve a BIG pat on the back.

I agree that wee need grass roots Anke but the Ronald Reagan I knew and LOVED was not very compromising on certain issues.....Strong National Security, Cold War, Pro-Life and his public belief in the indivual rights and liberties and his faith in GOD. He managed to be inclusive and not be Politically correct at the same time. I am sick and tired of being politically correct.....truth is truth....facts are facts....history is history and everyone is entitled to their personal opinion and expressing it whether I like it or not. He did not compromise with Omar Qadafi (sp?)....He did not give him years of sanctions.....negotiations...he gave him one warning and then he kept his word and we have had no problems from him since. Anyone remember how the hostages were released hours after Reagan was sworn in as President in 1981? That was because Iran KNEW he was a man of his word. Reagan called things like they were.....He NEVER APOLOGIZED FOR AMERICA BEING THE GREATEST COUNTRY ON THE FACE OF THE EARTH! He believed in America and the fundamentals of Christian beliefs this country was founded on and free market enterprise. He made me feel safe and proud to be an American for the and in my opinion and the opinion of many others was the greatest president since Abraham Lincoln and remains the greatest since him. He held Americans responsible for their actions and decisions which made them personally invested in their lives so they rose to the occasion and we were GREAT! We can be again but the Republican Party will cease to exist if they alienate the evangelical Christian Conservative, Pro-Life, Pro-Guns, Anti-Illegal Immigration, Strong National Security, Flag waving Americans. I know these people especially the ones from the south....I grew up as one of them and while we may not agree with all of their views.....we need them....WE HAVE TO HAVE THEM.....we have already alienated them with the past two elections and with so many moderate, Rockefellar republicans being elected. What we need is an American who has held a public job....served either active duty or reserves, national guard in the military, had experience in elected public service and governing and be proud of their Christian beliefs, and be Passionate. We don't need another Senator who has been there as long as the young adult republicans have been alive. I personally don't want the Republican Party to be a party of politically correct special interest groups....that is the Democrat Party....I want to belong to a Conservative Fiscally and most of all Socially Conservative who will nominate candidates to will represent these values....I am tired of compromising....we have compromised too much on our values, personal liberties and financial responsibilities too much already. The reason President George W. Bush was re-elected in 04 was not because he was a Fiscal Conservative (which I wish he had been more fiscally conservative) but he was re-elected for two reasons....National Security and his unwaivering beliefs and principals and his Christian Faith. With this last election I see our country divided into "groups" who dislike America so much and while we are not perfect and will never be perfect we are as close to it as any country will ever be. This election has set us back with the countries progress with racial issues about 50 years. I pray that will change soon. Also, with the way the media treated Sarah Palin we see that the Liberal Women in this country are not PRO Women they are PRO Choice Women....and Pro Choice Women only. Also, look at how some of the male political colleagues and politicians themselves treated and dismissed her.....I feel they were afraid of her....she wasn't from the good ol' boy network....that is the reason I first liked her. Of course after examing her positions on issues I fell in love with her as a candidate. Not because I am a woman and she is....although it was a nice bonus but she didn't grow up thinking I want to be president someday...she worked hard, ran a business with her husband....struggled financially.....saw a corrupt pta, city concil, and state goverment. She saw no one was doing anything to change it so she gave it a shot and was hugely successful! I admire that type of get off your butt and let's do something. Nothing aggrevates me more than people talking about doing something pro-active for ages and do nothing. I am an action type of girl. I believe in the shape the world is in and expecially our republican party some sincere good hearted action is better than none.

To sum me up I am a Military Wife, Mom of two teenagers, Pro-Life, Pro-Gun, Anti-illegal imigration, build a fence on both our Northern and Southern borders, Increase our military forces, Drill here Baby Drill.....look for alternatives but for now Drill here!...., Southern Born Baptist Christian, Pro-death penalty, and am in support of the fair tax doctrine! I feel anyone who votes in any election in the US should have to show a photo id proving they are a US Citizen. Hello and it is nice to chat/meet with all of you!

Anke, I am not well versed in the particulars of the past, but I feel your final take was "spot on"!

I think you hit the nail squarely on the head, Dena. Much like you, I don't think I've met a single person who was a McCain supporter during the primary...I guess he won because of the thought that "with McCain, we'll win the disenchanged Dem vote and the independent vote." Well, that just didn't happen. Of course, we all (with exception of single issue voters) supported him as our nominee, but the fire just wasn't there.

As it turns out, Barack Obama and Joe Biden just may do more to help the GOP rebuild than what effort all of us combined might muster. Those who think they will no longer have to worry about a mortgage payment or putting gas in their car just might take another look when reality hits home...and they realize they've been sold a "bill of goods."

Dena, After having attended the RNC Chairman Debate today, I can assure you that the party will be returning to it's conservative roots. One of the biggest problems facing us is how to share the lesson that you have learned, after the primaries are over , we have to go to work for our nominees, although we may not agree completely with them, they are certainly better than the alternative.
Comment by Dena Blaylock on January 5, 2009 at 7:38pm
I personally believe and if we look at the past two national elections that the party will never succeed again until they go back to the Reagan Conservative Roots. A huge reason we lost this Presidential race was because we did not have a conservative Presidential Candidate. Grass Roots people did not get excited about volunteering for the McCain campaign until he announced Sarah Palin as his running mate. Millions of conservative republicans sat home opting out of voting for a moderate republican. Now....I as a conservative republican voted for McCain because I saw it as if I did not vote it was a vote for the democratic nominee.....! If the republican party goes any more moderate....to the center....inclusive with it's morals, philosophies then I will become a Constitutionalist Party member!

Peter, I don't disagree with you a bit, but I am trying to find out exactly what the specific issues are that have (as mentioned in another post) caused the party to "lurch" to the right or otherwise impose litmus tests that split the party. I have an idea about what issues they have in mind, but I'd like to hear somone be honest and list those specific issues that supposedly drive people away instead of continually talking in nice sounding generalities.
Comment by Peter Sperry on January 5, 2009 at 3:07pm
Personally, I think rigid and unrealistic litmus tests are those which either demand 100 percent agreement on all issues or elevate a single issue to such importance failure to agree on that issue somehow prophibits cooperation on all others. I posted the remarks below on another web site but I think they make apply to this discussion as well.

Is a RINO someone who supports your position only 80 percent of the time, 60, 40? Or must they be 100 percent in order to get your stamp of approval? At what point is a Democrat who opposes our ideology 80 percent of the time preferable to a RINO who supports us 50 percent of the time? Take a look at the voting records for the 109th and 110th Congresses. You will find a grand total of 5 RINOs who supported the Republican position less than 50 percent of the time and 1 who supported it less often than the most conservative Democrat.

My general rule of thumb is to support whoever is closest to my ideology in the election at hand. I tend to vote fairly conservative in primaries; but I have yet to find any Democrat worth voting for in a general election.

We have torn ourselves apart over the RINO question here in Northern Virgina. And the result has been a steady progression of Democrat victories. We need to get beyond this. I worked like a dog to support Jim Miller in the 94 convention and 96 Senate primaries and I have supported conservatives in primaries and caucuses; but I have always swallowed hard and have voted the Republican in general elections, including Tom Davis and John Warner. They may not be my favorite candidates but their voting records are 55 - 65 percent conservative. Does anyone think their replacements will move to the right?

Going into the state legislative races in 2009 (with our entire House of Delegates up), should we be more concerned about whether a candidate takes a walk on some issues that are important to their district and critical to their reelection or whether they will stand with us on redistricting? Looking at the congressional races in 2010, how far do we ask our candidates to go in opposing the views of their constituents? The Northeast and Midwest states (as well as NOVA) are littered with defeated Republicans who put ideology ahead of district. Can you point to a single instance in which their Democrat replacement is an improvement or will support conservative principals more often than the Republican they defeated?

I have sat in many meetings with RINO elected officials and I understand they can make a person's skin crawl with disgust; but reality is a hard taskmaster. If you want to banish all so called RINOs from the party, than plan on Democrat control of federal, state and local government for the next 20 plus years. It may satisfy your sense of purity but think of the nation it will leave to your children.

Could you be more specific on these "rigid and unrealistic litmus test(s) which discourages many people from supporting our candidates" you are speaking about?
Comment by Clete Shultz on January 5, 2009 at 6:45am
...but Don, rebuilding the GOP as "...more open to people whose conservative beliefs vary in scope" is far, far different -- or at least, should be far different -- than rebuilding the GOP so as to embrace beliefs of the democrat party. As Republicans, we've already seen what happens when we ignore core, long held Republican values in favor of becoming "right-leaning-democrats."
Comment by Donald E. Scoggins on January 4, 2009 at 11:55pm
I understand planned this week are other opportunities to help Pat Herrity's campaign. More complete information will be distributed once its received from Mike Thompson.

On another note, tomorrow at noon Americans for Tax Reform is hosting at the National Press Club a debate among aspirants to become the next RNC chair. I hope the discussion will address the Republican Party becoming more open to people whose conservative beliefs vary in scope. Our defeats are self inflicted in part through the party's often rigid and unrealistic litmus test which discourages many people from supporting our candidates. Since the Republican brand is very damaged and quite frankly conservatism too, its going to require a gradual and consistent re-educating of folks to rebuild the GOP.
