I am Dr. Mike Buxton and work as a self-employed Licensed Clinical Psychologist. I have worked as a child psychologist for 24 years. Previously, I was a School Psychologist working in Virginia Beach schools (1978-86). During that time I also imported cars, built houses, developed computer software, had rental airplane and boat businesses among other enterprises. I am an instrument rated, multi-engine pilot, SCUBA diver, skier and blue water sailor.
I am a life-long conservative, activist Republican. I tried vigorously to unseat President Ford, by supporting Ronald Reagan in 1976. I was incensed by Watergate, in the summer of 1972 (my 1st Presidential election), and have detested improper political conduct since then.
I like to "make things happen". I joined the Portsmouth Republican Party in 2007 in order to become involved in the upcoming Presidential Race. I desired to prevent Hillary Clinton from becoming President and subsequently learned to be very careful of what you wish for. I served as an alternative McCain delegate for the VA-03 in Minnesota in 2008.
In 2009 I was a very active supporter of Bob McDonnell's successful Governor's Race, serving as one of the 15,000 "decider's" of our 3 way sweep of Governor, Lt. Gov and AG in Richmond as a Delegate from Portsmouth.
In 2010 Sean Devlin and I asked Chuck Smith to challenge Bobbi Scott for the 1st time since 2004. My very active involvement in Chuck's Federal election taught me a great deal about politics and campaigning.
In 2011 I actively supported Tommy Harmon in his state Senate race. I felt very strongly with more robust support he could have won that race; however, current leadership in the 3rd District appeared to fail him.
In 2012 I am seeking the Chairmanship position of the Portsmouth Republican Party. It is my hope that new leadership, focusing on Candidate, Precinct and Republican brand development will lead to much greater electoral success in Portsmouth, VA-03, Virginia and thorough out our nation in 2012 and well into the future.
Thank you for your interest in my political development.
