Let me say that I do not believe that Hispanics or Blacks are guilty of having poor values. I believe the disconnect falls more along generational lines than it does along racial lines. I know I sound like my dad but if you look at the pop culture that kids of all races are buying into it is no wonder that they are losing the most basic values. Whats more we should be ashamed to know that the worst of it comes from America's big cities. It is also evident in big cities around the world like Paris, Rio, and Amsterdam. I don't have any facts to back this up but I would guess that in South America rural communities would have better family values than in big cities, just like here in the U.S. The traditional values that are often believed to be followed by minorities are in the traditional family. Traditionally all sorts of different immigrant families were known to rally around each other and act as tight knit units to help them succeed. We have poisoned that with the social welfare system in much the same way the "safety net" has destroyed the American Family as a unit. If people had to count on their family we would see a resurgence in family values in all populations. As it stands right now the family as a unit is no longer necessary for security.

I get my information from a variety of sources. Just google "The Myth of Hispanic Family Values" and you can take your pick from numerous articles.

Was there a point to your post?

Look at me!! I'm Hispanic. And legal! Hey Donald, where are you getting your info about Hispanics? I agree with you that there is a big increase in out-of-wedlock births. Obviously, Hispanics are now the dominant ethnic group.(Minority is a bad word. The only Minorities in this country are illegal aliens) Before the problem was with Blacks. Still is. It's just that there are larger numbers of Hispanics. Remember, most are poor and uneducated immigrants.(I'm gonna assume they are illegal) I am also gonna go out and say that they are probably taking notes from the Blacks. Notes? Well, can you say Government assistance?

I posted a letter on REDCOUNTY.COM. Go check it out. I'm under Miami-Dade/SE Florida

I am unashamedly a Regan Conservative. Reagan brought so many together, he even attracted Democrats, however, he did it by laying out the Conservative Principles, articulated what they were, and didn't waver-

"A politcal party cannot be all things to all people. It must represent certain fundamental beliefs which must not be compromised for political expediency, or simply to swell it's numbers...And if there are those who cannot subscribe to these principles, then let them go their way." Then Governor, Ronald Reagan

Until we get back to the fundamental beliefs that Pres. Reagan talked about, we will wander in the Wilderness for a very long time. It seems to me that many new interpretations have arisen to dilute what was once a winning strategy, and the divide between Republicans and Conservatives is opening a much wider divide between those seemingly opposing views.

Scott, also you have to catch the woman's remarks at the very end to understand how this relates to cultural attitudes/our current political situation.

And Sandy, to answer your question--I agree with your comments below, but I don't think we as a party should "change our conservative principles into non-principles, just to attract voters."

I rather believe that doing exactly that is what has caused us to lose our solidarity and our salt lately--I say, the GOP must move to the right and not apologize for it; we'll gain back the disillusioned Bob Barr & Ron Paul defectors who bailed out of the McCain disaster, and we'll galvanize our existing base as Sarah Palin clearly did last Fall.

And we should have no illusions that our recent election defeats are entirely our fault. The media and the schools are so overwhelmingly leftist, derelict, and cravenly dishonest that for us to get a fair shake at all, and experience a renaissance, the country must apparently undergo the horrible failures of Jimmy Carter-esque socialism and international wussification/humiliation, in order to wake up and appreciate serious conservative patriotism and capitalist prosperity again--as we did when the Reagan era arose so brightly from the ashes of Carter's dark period of failure and futility.

Scott, there are now 2 pages of comments; you can trace the conversation from the beginning if you read from the first comment...also, some of us are working into this discussion some aspects of another blog commentary from a couple weeks ago.

I agree that just because an individual or couple give birth out-of-wedlock, does not necessarily exclude them from having an overall conservative character, and allegiance to the Republican cause--especially in the case of people like Mark and Bristol Palin, people who subsequently choose to act responsibly when confronted with the consequences of their lifestyles, etc.

But what I was addressing was two different instances, on this blog and another, where posters made the separate, absurd claims that blacks and hispanics are mostly conservative. Again, I must emphasize that it really doesn't take a lot of intellectual precision to differentiate between general, categorical statements such as that (along with their inane falsehood based on known statistics) and individual circumstances and character.

It can be very frustrating to attempt dialogue with those who simply don't pay attention to what is and isn't being said!

And Tito, I realized the liklihood that you were being sarcastic with your first comment, but I wasn't interested in indulging your flippancy...I rather welcomed the opportunity to act as if you really agree with me, because you should!

Thanks for sharing your story Mark. It is a fine example of making a mistake, and taking responsibility for that mistake, rather than adopting the attitude that you or your wife didn't want to be punished with a baby.

I would like to disclose that my wife was pregnant before we were engaged or married. That does not make me more or less conservative. I will admit that my lifestyle and behavior up to that point was extremely irresponsible and recklass. I thank God for giving me a less than subtle nudge toward respectablility. There is however a big difference between getting pregnant out of wedlock and children ending up in single parent households. It is not illegitimate to say however that if a particular group exhibits an extremely high rate of pregnancy out of wedlock that that groups promiscuity shows socially liberal tendancies. The older generations more than likely have the older conservative values while the younger generation has been poisoned by a pervasive pop culture that preaches do whatever feels good. I know...I've been down that road and it is dark.
